Emotional Intelligence as a Support for Professional Development in Engineering Education

2019

Abstract Engineering education is an expanding field due to the globalization of the engineering profession. Such globalization is driven by the evolution of both the engineering sciences by themselves as well as the evolution of technology and the professional environment. Approaching emotional intelligence as a support for professional development in engineering education is analyzed as a potentiation of necessary competences and abilities for academic performance in the engineering education environment as well as for reaching a high level of engineering professional performance in a diverse social context. The article includes an analysis of the current state in the field of theory and …

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Modelling-Oriented Workshops for Engineering Undergraduates in the Field of Thermally Activated Phenomena

2017

Two 20-h modelling-based workshops focused on the explanation of ther- mally activated phenomena were held at the University of Palermo, Italy, during the Academic Year 2014–2015. One of them was conducted by applying an inquiry-based approach, while the other, still based on laboratory and modelling activities, was not focused on inquiry. Seventy-two students belonging to the Undergraduate Program for Chemical Engineering attended the two workshops. The related content was focused on an à la Feynman unifying approach to thermally activated phenomena. Question- naires were administered to the students of both groups, before and post instruction. Responses were analysed using k-means cluster…

Perspectives and reflections on teaching linear algebra

2020

Abstract This paper presents ‘expert opinions’ on what should be taught in a first-year linear algebra course at university; the aim is to gain a generic picture and general guiding principles for such a course. Drawing on a Delphi method, 14 university professors—called ‘experts’ in this study—addressed the following questions: What should be on a first-year linear algebra undergraduate course for engineering and/or mathematics students? How could such courses be taught? What tools (if any) are essential to these two groups of students? The results of the investigation, these experts’ opinions, mainly concern what should be in a linear algebra course (e.g. problem-solving and applications)…

Exploring Realistic Mathematics Education in a Flipped Classroom Context at the Tertiary Level

2020

AbstractFlipped classroom (FC) pedagogical frameworks have recently gained considerable popularity, especially at secondary school levels. However, there are rich opportunities to explore FC at tertiary levels, but progress on the area requires instructors’ attention to well-designed tasks for students’ collaborative learning. Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) provides a foundation for the development of such tasks. This article advances research on the role of task design in a FC context by considering how RME heuristics may be developed to include the out-of-class phase, where students prepare for in-class work with videos. This adaption, named flipped RME classroom design, is explore…

Tailoring feedback in online assessment: Influence of learning styles on the feedback preferences and elaborated feedback effectiveness

2008

Design of feedback is a critical issue of online assessment development within Web-based Learning Systems (WBLSs). This paper examines the potential possibilities of tailoring the feedback that is presented to a student as a result of his/her preferences and responses to questions of an online test with respect to the individual learning styles (LS). The paper briefly reviews the main types of feedback that can be presented during online assessment and discusses the challenges in authoring and tailoring of feedback in WBLSs. We report the results of some recent experiments organized as online assessment of students through multiple-choice quizzes in which students were able to request diffe…

French engineering graduates in corporate R&D: is it worthwhile?

2009

In the early 1990s, several studies pointed out a significant gap in earnings between engineers in private firms working in Research and Development (R&D) and those in other activities. The purpose of this article is to assess, from conventional Mincerian models, to what extent these findings are still valid. The different levels of responsibility and job satisfaction of engineers in both types of activities are also analysed. The results clearly suggest a lower remuneration for engineers working in R&D in comparison to other activities, all things being equal. On the other hand, engineers involved in R&D activities have a greater dissatisfaction about the remuneration they receive, but als…

APIS to extract information in social channels in educational context

2018

In this days the world is involved in the research and development of new resources, and methods that allow the use of new technologies fulfilling a goal that is the learning of education through the Web, thus using resources such as different APIs for different purposes. Taking into account the functionalities provided by the APIs, the objective was to obtain information about the different educational resources in the social channels of the Universidad Tecnica Particular de Loja (UTPL). The study of pervious APIs is a part of the project Use of Cloud Computing tools, Bodies of Knowledge and affective computing in the process of developing technological skills focused on problem solving of…

CNC Milling Machine Simulation in Engineering Education

2012

In this work an effective simulator for a CNC milling machine is presented. It has been developed in EMC2, a free Opens Source NC software running in Linux environment, developed by an international community. It can be installed on a common PC and is able to: control a CNC machine; read part programs; display the tool path; send instructions to the CNC machine for the cutting process. In this work a new feature has been implemented, which can both display a 3D model of the machine and simulate all the motions of the movable parts of a real 3 axis end milling machine. This simulator lets the users not only verify the toolpath but also detect any possible collision by using the very computer…
